Le Tombeau de Jean Langlais PDF Score

This new work, Le Tombeau de Jean Langlais, was commissioned by the Seattle National AGO Convention in July 2022. It honors my teacher, mentor, and friend, who was a master of Gregorian Chant. Langlais loved the chants from the Messe des Morts (Requiem), and this piece employs seven of them, from the “Introit” to the “In Paradisum.” In an arch form, the work also honors the countless dead from the
Covid-19 pandemic. It begins and ends with the somber lub-dub iambic rhythm of a heartbeat in the pedal, which, after a central development, ultimately flatlines in death.
