The Chant d’Espoir (Song of Hope) was written for the October 1, 2023, concert celebrating the life and work of Dr. Robert T. Anderson, and the 30th anniversary of the C.B. Fisk Opus 101 pipe organ at SMU.
About four minutes in length and inspired by the musical language of Baker’s teacher Jean Langlais, the work is a soft and pensive meditation. Two themes permeate the new piece: RTA (notes D-F-A) and the tune Hanson Place (“At the River”). The coda contains a quotation of ‘Ubi caritas…’, ending with a quiet D Major chord.
Hear the composer play this piece.
